NGF registration or club membership: what you get and what you do not
Both give you an official handicap, but that is where the similarity ends. An honest comparison between independent golf with an NGF registration and joining a club.

Once you hold your course permit, every new golfer in the Netherlands faces the same question: join a club, or play independently with just a federation registration? The comparison is rarely made fairly. Clubs stress what you miss without membership; registration providers stress what you save. Here are both routes side by side, including the parts each side tends to leave out.
In short: an NGF registration provides everything formally required to play golf: official status and a WHS handicap. Club membership adds green-fee-free play on one home course, club competitions and a social structure. The right choice depends on how often, where and with whom you want to play.
What both routes share
On the points that formally matter, the routes are equal: an official handicap index under the World Handicap System, the ability to submit qualifying cards, access to virtually every Dutch course against a green fee, and a digital federation card in the GOLF.NL app. Anyone claiming you are not a real golfer without a club is formally wrong. The differences lie elsewhere.
What membership adds
Unlimited play on your home course without green fees, which becomes decisive for frequent players on one course. Club competitions and team events, largely closed to independent golfers. A built-in social structure with regular groups and a clubhouse where people know you. Practice facilities and, on busy courses, sometimes priority at tee times.
What the registration adds

The tipping point
Divide a club's yearly fee by the green fee you would otherwise pay. For most Dutch clubs the tipping point sits roughly at 25 to 35 rounds per year on that same course. Below that, independent play is cheaper. But do not only calculate: for many members, the competitions and the people are the real reason to join, even though they never appear on a receipt.
Our honest advice
Start independent. Almost nobody knows in year one how often they will play or whether club life appeals. Join a club once two things coincide: you play the same course frequently, and you find yourself wanting its people and its competitions. Your handicap simply moves with you; the WHS is one system. The routes do not exclude each other; they usually follow each other.
