Most amateurs leave that advantage entirely unused: tee somewhere between the markers, always the same height, and swing. > In short: the teeing area is a rectangle two club-lengths deep behind the markers, and you may place your ball anywhere inside it. Playing from outside costs two penalty strokes in stroke play and must be corrected. ## How big the teeing area really is The teeing area is a **rectangle two club-lengths deep**. The front edge is the line between the forward-most points of the two tee-markers, and the sides run straight back from their outside points. Your ball is in the teeing area as soon as any part of it touches or lies above that area. And **you yourself may stand outside it**, which is genuinely useful on a sharp dogleg or when the only level ground is just outside. ## What you may alter inside the teeing area Before your stroke you may alter the ground surface (for instance by making an indentation with club or foot), move, bend or break attached grass and other natural objects, remove or press down sand and soil, and remove dew, frost and water. Any other improvement brings the general penalty. **You may not move the tee-markers** to improve your stroke; that also brings the general penalty. ## The ball is not yet in play On the teeing area the ball is only in play once you make your stroke. Before that you may lift or move it without penalty, and if it falls off the tee you may re-tee it anywhere in the teeing area, again without penalty. ## Playing from outside the teeing area **In stroke play:** the general penalty of two strokes, and you **must** correct the mistake by playing from inside the teeing area. The stroke from outside does not count and that ball was never in play. Fail to correct it before starting the next hole, or before returning your card on the last hole, and you are disqualified. **In match play:** no penalty, but your opponent may cancel the stroke, promptly and before either of you plays again. ## Rules about the tee itself The ball may be played from a tee or from the ground, and sand placed to set the ball on counts as ground. A tee may be **no longer than 101.6 millimetres** and must conform to the equipment rules. Playing from a non-conforming tee brings the general penalty for a first breach and **disqualification** for a second. ## Tee height: the free advantage | Club | Height | Why | | ------------------ | ----------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- | | Driver | Half the ball above the crown of the clubface | You want to strike on the upswing, for height and less spin | | 3 or 5 wood | Ball just above the grass, about a centimetre | Short enough to sweep, high enough to catch it cleanly | | Hybrid | Very low, ball almost on the ground | This club is built to be played off the turf | | Iron | Ball just clear of the grass, half a centimetre | You strike down; too high produces a thin shot | | Par 3 with a wedge | Low or no tee at all | Contact and spin matter more than height | The classic beginner error is **teeing the driver too low**. The ball is then struck on the way down, which costs distance and increases the tendency to slice. ## Frequently asked questions **May I tee up in front of the markers?** No, that is outside the teeing area and costs two penalty strokes in stroke play. **What if the ball blows off the tee before my stroke?** Re-tee it without penalty, anywhere in the teeing area. **Does an air shot on the tee count?** Yes, if you intended to strike the ball.
