Golf apps: which ones you need for booking, scoring and your handicap

Search an app store for golf and you get hundreds of results. For actual use on a Dutch course, only three kinds matter, and most golfers need two of them.

In short: you need an app for your registration and handicap (in the Netherlands that is GOLF.NL), usually some way to book tee times, and optionally an app for distances and statistics.

The three kinds

1. The federation app. In the Netherlands this is GOLF.NL, run by the NGF. It shows your digital federation card at a course's reception, displays your handicap, lets you register qualifying rounds and enter scores, and holds course information including rating and slope. If you play on an NGF registration without club membership, this is exactly where that registration becomes visible.

2. The booking app. Dutch and Belgian courses use different systems: their own website, a national or international platform, or booking within the federation app itself. Check the website of the course you want to play rather than installing an app in advance.

3. The play app. Optional, and only useful once you know your own distances. It gives GPS distances to the front, middle and back of the green, and better versions track statistics too.

What genuinely helps

Useful: distance to the middle of the green, statistics across several rounds (putts and fairways hit say more than your total score), your handicap trend rather than individual rounds, and digital scorecards, where the division of roles between player and marker stays exactly the same.

Less useful than it looks: automatic swing analysis through your phone camera, since filming helps but automated analysis is rarely precise enough. And club recommendations, which are not permitted in competition anyway.

The rules

Measuring distance is allowed unless the committee prohibits it by local rule. Measuring slope is not: the function must be switched off and visibly so, or you face the general penalty and disqualification on repetition. A device that recommends club selection is likewise not allowed, nor is measuring wind as an aid to your stroke.

Phone etiquette

Phone on silent before the first tee. No calls during someone's stroke. Enter scores on the next tee, not on the green. Store it dry. And watch the battery: a GPS app running all round drains it quickly, and your digital federation card lives in the same device.
