Starting golf as a woman: equipment, clothing and the first steps

Women's clubs are not simply shorter men's clubs, and the forward tees are not a concession. What to know about equipment, clothing, tees and finding your place on the course.

Golf is one of the few sports where men and women can play together and beat each other, thanks to the handicap system. Even so, starting out differs for women on several points: equipment built to different specifications, a club culture that remains traditional in places, and practical clothing questions nobody discusses.

In short: women's clubs differ in flex, length, weight and loft, not just colour. Play from the forward tees, because that is where the course was designed for your distance. And the handicap system makes you an equal opponent from day one.

What is genuinely different about women's clubs

Softer flex (L or A): a softer shaft rebounds more at lower clubhead speed, producing height and distance. Shorter length, on average about 2.5 centimetres. Lighter overall weight, often with graphite shafts. More loft: a women's driver is frequently 12 to 14 degrees rather than 9 to 10.5, because at lower speed the ball has to get airborne at all. Thinner grips for smaller hands.

The crucial nuance: "ladies" is a category, not a diagnosis. What counts is your height, hand size and swing speed. Get fitted rather than choosing by label.

The tees: architecture, not concession

A course is built so that its hazards sit where the average player meets them. From tees too far back, par 4s become par 5s for you and the round grows longer and more frustrating. Formally, tees are tied to distance rather than gender, and more clubs now name them by colour or number. Course rating and slope differ per tee, so your handicap strokes adjust automatically: playing forward gives you no unfair advantage.

Clothing

Acceptable virtually everywhere: a golf polo or neat sports shirt with sleeves, a golf skirt, skort or neat trousers, and golf shoes without metal spikes. Where clubs differ: sleeveless tops and the minimum length of skirts and shorts. To begin, you genuinely need one polo, one pair of trousers or a skirt, and shoes. Invest instead, straight away, in good rain gear and a layering system.

What is not different

The rules are identical; there are no women's rules. The technique is identical, adapted to build and mobility rather than gender. The handicap system makes you equal: off 30 you can beat a 12 in a Stableford competition. And distance comes from technique and timing, not muscle mass.

Frequently asked questions

Must I buy women's clubs? No, you need clubs that fit your height, hand size and swing speed. For many women that is a women's specification, but not for everyone.

Can I start with my partner's clubs? For a few tries, yes, but clubs that are too long and too stiff make learning unnecessarily hard. A course with loan clubs is better.

Can I enter ordinary competitions? Yes. Most club competitions are mixed, and the handicap system evens out the differences.

At Zalm Golf you earn Handicap 54 in one or two days with loan clubs, in small groups and with no compulsory club membership.
